Old Venetian Harbor, Chania Town

Must see · Marina · Landmark
A remnant of the Venetian rule in Crete, Old Venetian Harbor sits at the heart of Chania's old town. Although this part of the city suffered massive damage during the bombing raids of World War II, the medieval harbor remains one of the most picturesque urban districts on the island. This old waterfront neighborhood contains some of Crete's finest Venetian mansions, restored and upgraded in the last few decades to accommodate boutique hotels, trendy restaurants, and elegant bars. The remains of the Venetian city walls frame a network of narrow backstreets extending from the harbor, where you can often find local artisans selling handmade crafts. • This is one of my favorite views in the city. The old Venetian Harbor, with the minaret on the pier. I love how ancient Crete is, you have Spanish, Venetian, Roman and ottoman occupation all in the same harbor over the last two thousand years. If you get a few blocked off the main drag and you check out the old walls they're lit up in red it's absolutely amazing.
  • The Old Venetian Harbour is a trademark of Chania (the second largest city in Crete). Although, to some, this may be considered a "touristy" place, it is visited and enjoyed by the locals alike. Numerous restaurants and cafes line the beautiful harbour. You'll also find plenty of hidden gems as you wonder down the maze of winding cobblestone streets. Locals and store owners are very friendly and hospitable. If you're looking for a place to stay, there are many hotels (most overlooking the harbour and sea). Such a vibrant atmosphere... You can start and end your evening there..
