Sitting on top of a hill above the city, Ankara Castle dominates the scenery with its 14-16 m (46-53 ft) high Byzantine walls. Dating back some 3,000 years, the complex still swarms with activity today and boasts ruins and centuries-old monuments. Here you can see mosques from the 12th century and ancient marble sarcophagi on one side of the road, and order a meal on the other. See homes of the locals that preserve the classical architectural style. Not only are the buildings authentic, but the lifestyle here hasn't changed much; domestic animals walk around backyards and people still beat skeins of wool on the roads. History place, no entrance fee, nice to explore the city from high, not recommended for kids on stroller or disability , many local gifts sellers in the way selling hand craft more »
As most of the people living here know, it has been neglected for so long and locals wouldn't even go there even though there is this spectacular view. The streets going up to the castle does not feel safe and the smell of urine can be pretty overwhelming when you get to the castle.
Provides a really good view of Ankara. It is not too crowded and it has a special kind of local charm on it. The only things I would take note of is that there are no barriers/ropes to prevent falling off, that to get up to the higher platforms of the castle you have to make sure you're physically comfortable climbing up.
