Pera Museum, Istanbul

#16 of 102 in Museums in Istanbul
Specialty Museum · Hidden Gem · Museum
Get lost in the art-filled halls of Pera Museum, whose numerous galleries put a special focus on Orientalism in the 19th century. The building itself took over the space of the old Hotel Bristol, founded in 1893, and was renovated to feature a Victorian-era facade. On the first floor, stop to admire collections of colored tiles and pottery, as well as Anatolian weights and measures. From here, continue upstairs to see more than 300 works by European, Ottoman, and Turkish masters, including Osman Hamdi Bey. Several exhibits change regularly, so look for something new each time you visit. • This museum is nice if you have an hour or so to kill while you’re around the area. When I was there, only two of the exhibit floors were open to visitors. I felt like it wasn’t enough. However, there were nice pieces I didn’t expect seeing there. The entry price is only 10 tl. I just wish there was more to see.
  • I'm personally outraged how this has a higher rating than the National Palaces Painting Museum in Istanbul. This was quite small and about half the collection is items such as pottery and jewelry, not necessarily art in the strict sense of the word. If one only has limited time in Istanbul I would skip this destination unless pottery happens to be your interest.
