Just a short drive north of San Francisco, Muir Woods National Monument protects a pristine area of about 97 hectares (240 acres) of old-growth redwood forest. Walk among the giant trees, which are some of the tallest living things on the planet. You can choose from several trails, ranging in length and difficulty. For an easy hike through a grove of trees nearly a millennium old, take the short main trail loop. If you feel a little more adventurous, put on pair of good hiking shoes and take the 3 km (2 mi) trail to the top of "Cardiac Hill," which offers unobstructed views of San Francisco and the Pacific Ocean. Getting parking reservations is usually a real pain, but right now you can get them the same day, so it's easy to visit if you have a car. Even so, there are a surprising number of visitors, so masks.... more »

We went last fall to San Francisco and decided to stop here as it is close. It was one of my favorite parts of the trip. The park rangers are excited to teach kids. It was so beautiful and not overly crowded. Lots to explore and go at your own pace. My kids got to be junior park rangers and get a badge.

We loved hiking here. It is a one of a kind experience. We reserved afternoon parking and were able to park close to the visitor center. It looked like sometimes the parking is pretty far out, my guess would be in the morning. My son was in awe of the giant trees. I highly recommend this park! ♥️
