Known for its iconic façade with mismatched towers, Fontaine Saint-Sulpice has an unusual architectural history. It has a Romanesque foundation and a Baroque interior, and holds the Gnomon of Saint-Sulpice--an astronomical measurement device used to determine the position of the sun in the sky. The church has a long-standing tradition of inviting talented organists to play its 18th-century Great Organ, which has a rich palette of sounds. Inside, on either side of the entrance, are the two halves of an enormous shell (Tridacna gigas) given to King Francis I by the Venetian Republic. The shells function as fonts for holy water, resting on rock-like bases sculpted by Jean-Baptiste Pigalle, who also sculpted a large white marble statue of Mary in the Lady Chapel. Saint Sulpice is a large, impressive church and well worth a stop. The high ceiling let the light in and the statues and the rest of the interior is incredibly illuminated.

Even without being a pivotal location in Dan Browns "DaVinci Code" where the Church contains the "Rose Line", it's certainly worth a visit. The line is there, but it was created for other things that are interesting too. The square around it. The mismatched towers, the art in the building and the open airy feel make it an excellent stop.

Massive, active Catholic Church located just a few blocks from the Jardin Luxembourg. Lovely, airy interior. Signs at front of the church indicate that there is a wheelchair entrance on the side of the church on Rue Palatine. However, I was unable to find it (likely due to the construction on the side of the church).
