Create an itinerary including Shakespeare and Company Bookstore
A haven for bibliophiles, Shakespeare and Company Bookstore presents an English-language collection of eclectic secondhand books, as well as Sunday tea, literary readings, and writers' meetings. Sylvia Beach Whitman, the original owner's daughter, now runs the bookshop her father, George, started as "Le Mistral" in 1951. He later renamed the store to honor the original shop owned by Sylvia Beach from 1919 to 1940. The shop became (and still is) a haven for an unconventional literary culture, and was frequented by Beat writers, including Allen Ginsberg. Filled from floor to ceiling with titles, each small room has walls peppered with quotes and postcards. Upstairs, you'll find a writer's area with a typewriter, a labyrinth of rooms, and a piano. For the price of your life story written on a sheet of paper, you can sleep upstairs in one of the 13 beds run by the bookshop, called "Hotel Tumbleweed." • My wife and daughter are big book readers. They were happy to come to this bookstore. The store has a cool vibe and books are everywhere.

  • If your a book lover than this is a fun stop. The history and the vibe of the place I loved. I purchased some books as gifts which they stamp with a Store Shakespear stamp.

  • Amazing store! Incredible history, great selection of books (mostly in English), and the best kind of atmosphere. There was a girl playing piano in the reading room and I got to sit and read while I listened to her play. That is true happiness.
  • Beautiful bookstore with a large selection of English books. Unfortunately there was a line, having customers wait about 30 minutes to get in and honestly I would not go again if it was busy. Many people go for some quick pictures but aside from the name value the bookstore is not particularly unique. On the other hand, if you have time to spare, you can take a book upstairs to the reading room and read in the company of high selves and loud tourists. Would recommend for the reading room and maybe a picture outside, but the prices are similar to most other bookstores and a book is a book in the end no matter where it was bought.
