Founded in the 10th century, Wurzburg served as the home of powerful prince-bishops for many centuries. The city is renowned for an 18th-century grand palace called the Residence--one of the finest structures in Europe and a high point of Baroque art. Wurzburg is also home to one of the oldest churches in Germany, built in the eighth century atop a former pagan shrine. Though heavy bombing in 1945 destroyed most of its major buildings, much of the city has long since been rebuilt. Rather distinctive among German cities, many post-war Modernistic houses were erected right next to Wurzburg's most notable restored buildings. Though lacking an airport, the city has a good connection to the nation's expressway network. Thus, it can be easily reached from practically anywhere in Europe.
