Create an itinerary including Basilica San Nicola
A pilgrimage destination for Roman Catholics and Eastern Orthodox Christians, Basilica San Nicola was constructed in the 11th and 12th centuries. The origins of the basilica are steeped in legend--one is that St. Nicolas passed by Bari on his way to Rome and declared that it would be his final resting place. Today, the structure houses one of the most notable Romanesque sculptural works in southern Italy: a bishop's throne. Walk over mosaic pathways and between the two vast towers that give the church the appearance of a castle. It actually was used as a castle on four separate occasions. • A very well kept Basilca in the centro storico. Statue of \St Nicholas very nice and it is on the left side of the church.

  • Really beautiful church, even for those who do not appreciate much the religious architecture. Beautifully decorated inside and outside. A must-see.

  • One of the first Norman churches that was built in southern Italy and one of Bari's landmarks. It was originally constructed during the 12th century to house the relics of Saint Nicolas stolen in 1087 by local fishing folk from the Byzantine empire. Even today, Saint Nicolas' relics (that are ensconced in a shrine of a magnificent, vaulted crypt) are said to emanate an aromatic myrrh with miraculous healing powers, thus making St Nicolas temple one of the most important pilgrimage places for both Catholic and Orthodox Christians.
  • Nice. A nearby cat said the Falcon 9 rocket configuration was inspired by the lights in this church. I wasn't convinced but I can see their point. Really not to be missed even if it takes walking all the way from the station.
